 Josiah Newman, a graduate student at Penn State, is participating in the Steamtown Marathon on October 7th, 2012. He writes:

" The scandal surrounding [Penn State] University has shocked alumni, fans, students, faculty members, and anyone who associates themselves with the Penn State community. In an effort to have a positive impact I am dedicating my efforts focused at this marathon to raise funds for the Fulton County Center for Families (FCCF)."

 The Fulton County Center for Families is currently accepting applications for an Early Head Start home visitor. This is a full-time position with benefits. Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED and further education/experience with young children, as well as a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Mark your calendars - Camp Parent 2011 will be June 6th, 7th, 8th, and 10th.

Camp Parent is an exciting week for parents to come together and learn new fun ways to become the best parent you can be. This year's camp will start off with a luau on June 6th from 5:00—8:00pm.  On the 7th and 8th, adults will participate in parenting workshops and children will take part in a wide variety of games and learning activities.  The week will culminate with a field trip on the 10th, open to those families who attend all three days of camp.

The Fulton County Center for Families will once again host the Reality Tour this December.

The Reality Tour is a dramatic and interactive look at the physical and legal consequences of substance abuse.  Participants follow the life of a teen on drugs in a powerful depiction of the suffering that drug and alcohol abuse put far too many families through.  This experience is designed for youth age 10 and up; parent attendance is required as well, allowing the tour to serve as a starting point for further family discussion of the issues raised.

The Reality Tour  begins promptly at 6:00 PM on December 14th at the Fulton County Courthouse in McConnellsburg.  Whether you want to attend as a participant or would like to volunteer your time to help with the tour, we would love to see you there!  To sign up… Read more >>

Young learners going to childcare at the Fulton County Center for Families found themselves entering an island of excitement this past week. To celebrate National Young Readers’ Week, FCCF staff redecorated the daycare center around the theme of Treasure Island. Staff and children dressed up as their favorite storybook characters on Monday as they played around the giant cardboard pirate ship and on Wednesday everyone dressed down for Movie & PJs day. Mother Goose put in an appearance on Friday to read, while parents and grandparents stopped by to share their favorite books with children throughout the week.

The Fulton County Center for Families is beginning implementation of the 2010-2011 Integrated Children's Services Plan (ICSP) Promising Practices grant.  

The ICSP Promising Practices program is based around school success with an emphasis on early intervention and prevention of challenging through parent education and involvement.  As part of this program a family support coordinator will work directly with county schools and center staff, parents, and children to implement environmental and behavior modification strategies to improve school success.  The coordinator will also provide advocacy and support for the parents of those children with challenging behaviors or who have been identified as likely to withdrawal from public school.  This coordinator will also be available as an advocate to those families in the… Read more >>

The American Lung Association has awarded the Fulton County Partnership funding for tobacco control efforts as part of a Pennsylvania Department of Health grant. This project will focus on prevention, cessation, and community outreach.

Prevention efforts will seek to educate county students and the families of young children about the dangers of tobacco use in an effort to empower them to remain tobacco free.  The county's three school districts and Teens Against Tobacco Use will be provided with anti-tobacco curricula and materials.  The Fulton County Center for Families will incorporate the Clean Air for Healthy Children in it's home- and center-based programs while also providing an anti-tobacco message as part of all of its family activities and events.

On June 11th, the Fulton County Center for Families invited area families to see the Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, Maryland for the first quarterly FCCF fatherhood event.  47 people joined us for this event, but we hope to see even more next time.  Keep an eye out for more information on the next fatherhood event at the end of the summer!

Fulton County has been selected as one of eight new communities throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to participate in the Communities That Care initiative, a nationally recognized science-based prevention planning process. The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, through its Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, which has supported Communities That Care in Pennsylvania for over a decade, made the announcement at a community kick-off event held on January 19 at the Fulton Theater in McConnellsburg
